FRANS HALS, THE PAINTER
The Frans Hals exhibition is on display at The Rijksmuseum from February 16th to June 9, 2024.
In his era, Frans Hals stood out as an innovative artist, rivaling painters like Rembrandt in the Netherlands and Velázquez in Spain. Recognized for his unique style, he was a sought-after portraitist, catering not only to the affluent citizens of Haarlem but also to clients from other Dutch cities. Despite his initial prominence, Hals’ work gradually faded into obscurity throughout the 18th century.
Rediscovered in the mid-19th century by the French art critic Théophile Thoré-Bürger, he, along with Vermeer and Rembrandt, was hailed as part of the ‘big three’ of 17th-century Dutch painting until the 20s. After a period of diminished attention, the Rijksmuseum aims to reintroduce Hals to a new generation, highlighting his groundbreaking contributions.
